CHAPTER TWELVE

Nox wasn’t sure what to expect when he agreed to go to a ball with Silver, but he definitely hadn’t imagined everything going like it had.

Now that things were mended with Fineen, at least for the time being, Nox evanesced to the Unseelie Court to update its king. Despite Nox making a mess of his initial attempt to learn more about the Hunters, now he had some real information to share.

Instead of showing up unannounced, he’d sent a message to Lola to set up a meeting with the king. She got back to him with a time and place in the Unseelie Court. He was to meet Kaelem at a new club called The Posh Pixie.

Nox had to admit meeting the Unseelie King in public had him feeling pretty impressive.

When he appeared in front of the club, the sound of techno music vibrated around him. A purple carpet led from the club’s entrance, sectioned off with black velvet rope. The line continued on past the carpet, down the street, and around the corner.

Apparently, this was the new Unseelie hot spot.

Nox approached the woman standing by the door with a tablet of some sort in her hand. In some ways, the Unseelie Court seemed more like the mortal realm every day. As humans developed new technology, the Unseelie Court integrated it into its day-to-day—or rather, night-to-night—life.

“Line’s over there,” she said without looking up.

Nox kept his chin raised and his expression neutral. “I’m here to meet with the king.”

She peered up from the screen. “Name?”

“Nox.”

The woman eyed him up and down. “I’m supposed to allow you in, but right now you’re breaking the dress code.”

Nox glanced at the line. Everyone wore all black and white. Since there was no way he was going to go back to the mortal realm to change, he looked down at his clothes and envisioned them turning into black dress pants, a black shirt, with white shoes and a white tie. Using glamour he now wore the imagined outfit.

“Better?”

“We don’t recommend glamoured outfits, but since you’re here for the king, I’ll let it slide this time,” she said. “The king is upstairs waiting for you.”

Nox stepped inside to loud music and multi-colored lights moving across the room. The room was packed with fae jumping up and down to the beat. The drinks in their hands sloshed out and splattered across everyone, but no one seemed to mind.

Nox stuck to the outside of the crowd, doing his best not to get soaked before he found Kaelem, and made his way to the staircase on the other side of the room. After climbing two flights of stairs, he entered a much quieter room filled with booths. At first, the room seemed empty, but then he saw Kaelem in a back corner booth.

“Hello,” Kaelem said. “I’ve requested some privacy up here for the time being.”

Nox scooted into the booth across from the king. “This place is quite fancy.”

“Thank you. I’d been meaning to check it out and figured meeting you here would give me just the reason.
